1. What are the requirements for obtaining a permit to carry a concealed weapon (CCW)?
In order to obtain a CCW permit, a person must:
- Be of good moral character (as verified by passing an interview and a thorough background investigation).
- Show good cause why a permit should be issued.
- Complete an approved firearm safety course.
- Live in Ventura County or one of the cities within Ventura County or work primarily at a business located in Ventura County or one of the cities within Ventura County.

2. If approved, how long is my CCW permit valid?
Residents of Ventura County may obtain a permit that is valid for two (2) years and then must be renewed. A person who obtains a permit because of their employment in Ventura County may obtain a permit that is valid only in Ventura County and only for 90 days.

3. How do I get a CCW permit application?
You can pick up an application packet at the Licensing counter (located on the first floor of the Sheriff’s Main Jail Annex at the Government Center in Ventura) during business hours, or you can have a packet mailed to you by calling (805) 654-2371 and requesting one.

5. When are the fees for the CCW permit paid?
Twenty percent of the fees (which includes Ventura County processing fees and the Department of Justice fees) are due at the time you submit your application for processing. The remainder of the fees are due if and when your application is approved. The fees vary by permit type and whether the permit is new or a renewal.

6. When should I complete the required firearm safety classes/qualification?
You should complete the classes after being notified by Sheriff’s Records staff of your preliminary approval, based upon your interview and background investigation.

You must take the firearm safety classes from one of the CCW instructors listed in the packet. These are the only instructors certified by the Sheriff’s Department.
