(A) James Hanna

Transient / Ojai

Early this morning deputies from the Ojai Station were dispatched to Oak Grove School for a call of an in progress burglary. A teacher at the private school interrupted the burglary when he opened up his classroom for the day.  The startled suspect jumped out of the same window he used to break into the classroom and ran southbound away from the school. The suspect was last seen running into the Besant Meadows. The reporting party provided sheriff's dispatch with a description of the suspect and his clothing.

While deputies were searching the area another citizen called sheriff's dispatch and reported a suspicious subject 'pretending' to be asleep under a tree on the south side of Besant Meadows. The description of this subject matched the description of the burglary suspect. Based on the information from the second caller, deputies hiked up a hill in the meadow and located James Hanna under a tree.

During the initial detention Hanna was suspected of being under the influence of a controlled substance.  Hanna became combative and physically resisted when the deputy attempted to arrest him and place him in handcuffs.  After a brief struggle Hanna was arrested for being under the influence and resisting arrest.

The investigation continued and deputies confirmed that Hanna was the burglary suspect from the call at Oak Grove School.  Hanna was transported to the Ojai Station for further investigation.  At the station deputies learned that Hanna had two outstanding felony warrants from Ventura County. The arrest warrants were for grand theft and possession of controlled substance for sale.

During a search of Hanna's backpack deputies discovered that Hanna was currently in possession of several ounces of marijuana for sale, concentrated cannabis, methamphetamine and prescription medication packaged for sale.

Hanna was ultimately arrested and booked into the Pre-Trial Detention Facility for burglary, under the influence of a controlled substance, resisting arrest, possession of concentrated cannabis, transportation of marijuana, possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana for sales and the two felony warrants.
