On October 27, 2015, the Ventura County Interagency Pharmaceutical Crimes Unit (PCU) continued their investigation into an Oxnard physician regarding claims of overprescribing opiate, and other controlled substance medication, without a medical necessity.


A search warrant was served at Dr. Sherman's Oxnard office. Numerous medical files and other items of evidentiary value were seized during the service of the warrant. The search was related to a several month investigation related to the amount of prescription drugs coming from Dr. Sherman's office. The investigation revealed Dr. Sherman's office had become a source of supply for drug seeking and drug dealing patients.


The California Department of Health Care Services as well as other teams from the Ventura County Narcotics Task Force assisted in the investigation.

The Ventura County Interagency Pharmaceutical Crimes Unit is a task force made up of members from the Ventura County Sheriff's Office, Simi Valley Police Department, Thousand Oaks Police Department, the District Attorney's Office Bureau of Investigation, the California Highway Patrol, and the Health Quality Investigation Unit of the California Division of Investigation. The primary mission of the task force is combating the transfer of legal prescription medication to the illegal market. In addition, the task force works to identify and stop new trends of abuse among the younger population and investigates overdose deaths due to both prescription medication and illicit drug use.
