Ojai Citizen Academy

Nature of Incident: Ojai Citizen Academy   


Location: Ojai Police Department (402 S. Ventura St. Ojai, CA 93023)        


On February 16, 2012, the Ojai Police Department will begin its 2012 Citizen's Academy program. It's a ten-week course designed to give citizens an overview of the police department's function and operational procedures.


There will be presentations by a superior court judge, K-9 officer, S.W.A.T. team members, bomb squad, narcotic officers, and many others.  Participants will also have the opportunity to meet the Chief of Police and get a comprehensive tour of the police station. There will be field trips to the Pre-Trial Detention Facility (main jail), Sheriff's Dispatch, the Sheriff's Training Academy, and heliport. Participants will also get the opportunity to go on a ride-along with a patrol deputy in Ojai.


Anyone interested in attending the Citizen's Academy can get an application at the Ojai Police Station or have one mailed by calling 646-1414.  Potential candidates must be at least 18 years of age, live or work in Ojai or the unincorporated area of the Ojai Valley, have no felony convictions, and have no misdemeanor convictions within one year of applying. Applications can be mailed, faxed (640-1803), e-mailed to or dropped of at the police station.


Classes will meet on Thursday evenings from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM for ten consecutive weeks with no class scheduled for April 5th. Classes will be held at the Ojai Police Station.
