The Ventura County Sheriff's Office is pleased to announce that Governor Jerry Brown signed Assembly Resolution 142 (ACR-142) to dedicate a portion of State Route 33 in honor of Ventura County Deputy Sheriff Peter Aguirre, Jr.  The portion of State Route 33 from Ojai Avenue to Fairview Road will be known as 'Ventura County Deputy Sheriff Peter Aguirre, Jr. Memorial Highway.'

Deputy Aguirre was tragically killed on July 17, 1996 while investigating a domestic disturbance in the Ojai Valley community of Meiners Oaks.  This year marks the 20th anniversary of the incident.  The man responsible for Deputy Aguirre's death is currently on California's death row.

Deputy Aguirre was a devoted husband and father of a two year old daughter at the time of his tragic death.  Deputy Aguirre is survived by his wife, Dina and his daughter Gabriella.

The National Latino Peace Officers Association of Ventura County, Assemblyman Das Williams, who authored Assembly Resolution 142, and Assemblywoman Jacqui Irwin were instrumental in passing the legislation for the highway sign.

A picture of the replica highway sign is attached.  Information will be available about the date and time of the highway dedication at a later time.
