A 39-year-old Westlake Village resident was arrested after detectives linked him to a home burglary where he left behind a receipt in the victim's home.  That receipt led detectives to the home of Craig Barnikel, where a search warrant led to the discovery of evidence connecting him to the Thousand Oaks burglary.

The burglary occurred in July in the 2900 block of Bear River Circle, where the victims had been on a 10-day vacation and had discovered the crime when they returned home.  Deputies examined the scene and found a receipt from CVS Pharmacy that did not belong to the victims.

Thousand Oaks detectives were assigned the case and identified Craig Barnikel as the receipt's original owner.  On August2, 2017, Barnikel was arrested for residential burglary and booked into the Ventura County Jail.

On August 4, 2017, the Ventura County District Attorney's Office charged Barnikel with residential burglary and added a special enhancement for being a habitual offender under the three strikes law.  Barnikel remains in custody and his bail is set at $355,000.
