Narrative:

On the morning of August 16th, 2017, deputies from the Moorpark Police Department responded to a call of a vehicle burglary in the 4100 Block of Kingsview Road in the City of Moorpark.  During their initial investigation, deputies learned that a wallet, containing several credit cards and personal checks was taken from inside of the locked vehicle, the previous evening.  A few days later, deputies learned that an individual had attempted to pass a facsimile of one of the personal checks at an area bank.

Detectives from the Moorpark Investigations Bureau conducted an investigation into the incident and identified the subject who attempted to pass the bogus check as Suspect Walter Covarrubias of Ventura.  Detectives authored and obtained a search warrant granting permission to search Covarrubias' residence for evidence related to the bogus check.

On the afternoon of September 28th, 2017, detectives observed Covarrubias driving in the area of Citrus Drive and Wells Road in the City of Ventura and conducted a traffic stop on his vehicle.  Detectives immediately arrested Covarrubius on suspicion of passing the bogus check.  They also contacted and eventually arrested the passenger in the vehicle, identified as Suspect Darlene Ramirez, for an unrelated drug charge.

With the assistance of patrol units from the Headquarters Station, detectives then served the search warrant at Covarrubius' residence, in the 11000 Block of Citrus Drive in Ventura, and located additional evidence related to the bogus check.  Detectives are following up with additional victims they have been able to identify.

Covarrubias was booked at the Ventura Main Jail and charged with a violation of Identity Theft/ 530.5(a) PC.  His bail was set at $50,000.  Ramirez was also booked at the Ventura Main jail and charged with U.I. narcotics / 11550(a)HS and released on her promise to appear at a later date.
