(P) Brandon Deshotel  Oak Park  19

On January 7, 2018, at about 6:30 pm, Brandon Deshotel made a 911 call and reported he was

lost in the area of China Flats, just north of Oak Park. Deshotel was only able to provide limited

information to the Sheriff's Communication Center before his cellular phone lost power.

However, based on his call, a GPS location was obtained.

At about 6:45 pm, the East Valley Search and Rescue Team was activated and responded to the

area to search for Deshotel. Twelve volunteer members accessed China Flats from different

directions in an effort to cordon off a search area based on the GPS location. At about 8:30 pm,

search and Rescue members heard Deshotel yelling for help. Deshotel was located off the trail,

south of the China Flat trail. Search and Rescue members had to hike through overgrown

vegetation to access Deshotel who was in good health. Deshotel was driven out of the area and

returned to his vehicle at the King James Trailhead.

The East Valley Search and Rescue Team wants to remind anyone enjoying the open spaces of

Ventura County to remember to file a hiking plan. In addition to a hiking plan, always remember

to take the ten essentials: navigation (map and compass), sun protection, extra clothing,

flashlight, first-aid supplies, fire (waterproof matches or lighter), multi-tool, food, water, and an

emergency shelter. Hiking plans are available for download at
