On June 19, 2012, at approximately 1026 hours, Ojai patrol deputies were dispatched to Ojai Gas in reference to two suspects attempting to fraudulently use another person's credit card. An alert employee of Ojai Gas called Sheriff's Communication Center reporting the crime and that the subjects were attempting to leave the scene.

Deputies arrived on scene in just over three minutes and contacted suspects Jason Piel and Brandie Cox. Piel gave deputies a fictitious name because he is a wanted fugitive out of Kansas City Missouri for a parole violation pertaining to first-degree sodomy of a child under 14 years old. Piel is also a sex registrant from the state of Missouri.

Evidence was collected at the scene confirming that Cox attempted to use another person's credit card without permission. Piel and Cox are responsible for other financial crimes in Camarillo and Santa Barbara. Both suspects were under the influence of illegal drugs when contacted.

Piel was arrested for 11550(a)HS, Under the Influence of a Controlled Substance, and for the outstanding warrant. Cox was arrested for 530.5(a)PC, Identity Theft, 484f(a)PC, Forgery of Access Card, and 11550(a)HS. Piel and Cox were booked into the Ventura County Jail.

An investigation for additional victims is ongoing.
