Nature of Incident: Disaster Assistance Response Team / Community Events
Location: City of Thousand Oaks
Date & Time: Spring 2011
Unit Responsible: Thousand Oaks Crime Prevention
Narrative: The Thousand Oaks Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART) is a group of citizen volunteers who are trained in a variety of emergency techniques. DART members are trained in earthquake preparedness and response, light search and rescue, first aid, fire safety, traffic control, safety assessment, and other disaster related services. Its members are prepared to respond to local disasters.
Conceptually introduced in the Thousand Oaks area in late 1992, the DART program was adopted by the City Council in early 1993. Today, the approximately 40 members meet and train monthly to remain prepared to assist local government and public safety agencies serving the Conejo Valley and Ventura County. The team is also involved in community service and education. In the months of April and May, the team participated in several community events and donated nearly 900 hours of service. The team provided first aid, missing person searches, community education displays, and communication support throughout the events. In all, the team supported Persian New Year, Arbor Day, Chili Cook-Off, Conejo Valley Days carnival, Senior Concerns Love Run, Relay for Life, the Amgen Tour of California, and the Thousand Oaks Health Expo.
In addition, recent training activities involving police, fire and FEMA agencies were conducted at the County Health Department's Medical Shelter Event. The event included classroom instruction on a variety of topics and a mass casualty exercise.
