Oakview - Sylmar Man Arrested for Mail Theft and Check Fraud

On 4/30/2013, a victim contacted the Ventura County Sheriff's Office to report a theft of mail that resulted in the victim's check being altered and cashed for $850. Additionally, the victim's checking account information was duplicated on several false checks that were passed in the cities of Tujunga, Woodland Hills, and Northridge.  


Deputies responded and began an investigation. Investigators followed up on the information provided and contacted the businesses where these fictitious checks were passed. Video evidence was obtained.  Investigators were able to positively identify the suspect.


On 8/16/2013, Investigators located and arrested Dennis Narag. He was booked for the felony commercial burglary, felony check fraud, and fraudulent use of bank account information. Narag's bail was set at $15,000 for the all the charges.


Ojai police are asking that all citizens be aware of and report any suspicious activity related to mail boxes. Mail theft is becoming more prevalent. It is recommended that citizens obtain locking mailboxes to deter and prevent mail theft.
