Nature of Incident:

Moorpark Police and Sheriff's Office are now using Twitter and Nixle

Location:

City of Moorpark and Unincorporated Areas around Moorpark

Date & Time:

Wednesday, November 13, 2013

Unit(s) Responsible:

Moorpark Police Department - Beat Coordinator Unit

Narrative:

The Moorpark Police Department and the Ventura County Sheriff's Office are now using Twitter and Nixle to provide valuable information to our community.  Rather than having to search the web and all those public safety websites, the community can now join twitter and Nixle for free and receive this information through text messages and email.  Examples of information sent out to residents through this service would be media releases, significant traffic problems/road closures, major disaster event updates, and community events.

Additionally, you can get instant Urgent notification and Emergency Alerts sent to your Smart Phone by texting to 888777 and then entering the zip code of the area you would like alerts from in the body of the text.  These will be urgent messages and emergency alerts only.  Community event items will not be sent to you through this service.  To receive community information, press releases and event information, you will need to join Twitter and Nixle.  Examples of information sent to the text notification are significant traffic problems/road closures, and major disaster event updates (wildfires, floods, etc.).

Subscribing residents can choose which local agencies they want to follow based on the community they live in.  Subscribers can also choose the way in which alerts are received: by email or text message.  This service is free, secure, reliable and easy to use.  The Nixle program builds on the foundations of other popular social media services, such as Twitter and Facebook.  When citizens receive information from our agency/patrol station via Nixle, they know it is a public safety agency and the information is reliable.

Community residents can immediately begin receiving pertinent information from Nixle via text message and email, or following us on our twitter account:
