Search and Rescue Dive Team - The Ventura County Sheriff’s Department Underwater Search and Rescue Team is seeking qualified divers who are skilled and reliable and willing to volunteer their time, resources, and efforts in a commitment to their community.

Prospective candidates must attend the orientation session for the Underwater Academy on Friday, June 17 at 7:00 PM at the Sheriff’s Academy, located at Eubanks and Willis on the grounds of the Camarillo Airport.

Fee: $200.00 to offset cost of the training.

In order to be eligible for team membership, candidates must demonstrate mastery of advanced diving skill by successfully completing the training program. Classes are held on Friday evenings and Sunday mornings from June 17 through September 11, 2005, excluding holiday weekends (Independence Day and Labor Day).

Candidates must:

  • Be 21 years of age.
  • Own their personal dive equipment.
  • Be a resident of Ventura County or immediate vicinity.
  • Hold a current Open Water Certification (Advanced Certification is preferred).
  • Possess a valid California Driver License.
  • Meet all background requirements of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department.
  • Demonstrate strong watermanship skills and commitment to the program.
  • Possess First Aid/CPR certification (may be obtained concurrent with the Dive Academy).

Search and Rescue - This team is comprised of highly skilled volunteers who are available to respond to wilderness emergencies in Ventura County. These volunteers receive special training in the areas of search management, emergency medical care, rock climbing, wilderness survival, victim evacuation techniques, radio communications, and helicopter procedures. Reserve Deputy Sheriff - Reserve Deputies receive specialized training from the Ventura County Police and Sheriff's Reserve Academy so they may perform peace officer functions on a volunteer basis. The Sheriff's Department uses Reserve Deputies to supplement regular sworn deputies. Reserve Deputies provide additional resources, backup, and assistance as needed. They also have the opportunity to work in a variety of assignments and locations within the Sheriff's Department's jurisdiction. Inmate Services - Inmate Services seek people who wish to help those who are incarcerated within the Ventura County jail system. Interested volunteers may become involved through their local community churches, Ventura County's Library Services Agency's "Reading Program for Adults" (literacy program), and Alcoholics and Narcotics Anonymous. Donations of soft-covered books are accepted by calling (805) 933-8561; yarn is also sought for a program in which inmates crochet afghans for donations to community rest homes and homeless shelters.
