Who is John McCain?
John McCain was a Vietnam War veteran and a six-term U.S. senator from the state of Arizona. He was the Republican nominee for the 2008 presidential election, before his loss to Barack Obama.
Early life & Education
John Sidney McCain III was born on August 29, 1936, at Coco Solo Naval Air Station in the Panama Canal Zone to naval officer John S. McCain Jr. and his wife, Roberta.
McCain spent his childhood and adult years moving between naval bases in America and abroad. He attended Episcopal High School, a private preparatory boarding school in Alexandria, Virginia, until graduating in 1954.
Like his father and grandfather, McCain graduated from the Naval Academy at Annapolis in 1958. He also graduated from flight school in 1960.
Professional Career
Early Years & Military Service
He served in the navy as a ground attack pilot. In 1967, during the Vietnam War, McCain was nearly killed in a severe accidental fire aboard the aircraft carrier USS Forrestal.
Later that year McCain’s plane was shot down over Hanoi, and, badly injured, he was captured by the North Vietnamese.
Finally released in 1973, he received a hero’s welcome home as well as numerous service awards including the Silver Star and the Legion of Merit.
McCain retired from the army in 1981. In 1977 he became the navy’s liaison to the U.S. senate, which later called his entry into the world of politics.
Political Career
McCain relocated to Arizona, and in 1982 he was elected to the House of Representatives. After serving two years, he successfully ran for a seat in the U.S. Senate in 1986.
But McCain also became embroiled in loan scandals of the 1980s, as a result of his connections with Charles Keating Jr. , who had engaged in fraud. Although cleared by the Senate in 1991 of illegalities in his dealings on Keating’s behalf, McCain was mildly rebuked for exercising “poor judgment.”
Duly embarrassed, McCain became a champion of campaign finance reform; he collaborated with the liberal Democratic senator Russ Feingold of Wisconsin, and, after a seven-year battle, the pair saw the McCain-Feingold Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act signed into law in 2002.
The legislation, which restricted the political parties’ use of funds not subject to federal limits, was McCain’s signal achievement on Capitol Hill.
On most issues including military spending, labor legislation, abortion, and gun regulation McCain’s record in the Senate was basically conservative.
Despite his years in captivity in Vietnam, McCain strongly advocated restoring diplomatic relations with that country, finally achieved in 1995.
Presidential Campaigns of John McCain
McCain weathered the scandal and won reelection to the Senate in 1992 and 1998, each time with a solid majority. He worked diligently in support of increased tobacco legislation and reforming the campaign finance system.
In 1999, McCain published Faith of My Fathers, the story of his family’s military history and his own experiences as a POW. He also emerged as a solid challenger to the front-runner, Governor George W. Bush of Texas, for the Republican presidential nomination in 2000. In the New Hampshire primary, McCain won by a surprisingly wide margin, largely bolstered by independent voters and crossover Democrats.
After a roller-coaster ride during the primaries, Bush won South Carolina, while McCain captured Michigan and Arizona, Bush emerged triumphant on “Super Tuesday” in early March 2000, winning New York and California, among several other states. Though McCain won most of the New England states, his large electoral deficit forced him to “suspend” his campaign indefinitely.

McCain supported the Iraq War, but criticized the Pentagon several times. McCain supported the 2007 surge of more than 20,000 troops, which supporters said increased security in Iraq.

Tragedy
On July 14, 2017, McCain underwent a procedure to remove a blood clot from above his left eye at the Mayo Clinic Hospital in Phoenix. The operation led to the discovery of an aggressive, malignant brain tumor known as glioblastoma.
End of Treatment and Death
On August 24, 2018, a statement from the McCain family announced the senator would undergo further treatment for his cancer.
On August 25, just one day after the announcement, McCain died at his home in Sedona, Arizona, at age 81.
